Missing Lower Molars

The Story:

Patient lost three of his lower left teeth including his molars. They were extracted due to deep decay. He did not want a partial denture and wanted a more long term solution. Dental implants were discussed as the primary option.

Treatment:

Three dental implants were placed with IV sedation. The entire procedure took about one hour. After 3 months of healing, his dentist (a prosthodontist) took impressions and had custom extensions and crowns made. The crowns were separate so patient can floss and brush them normally. What he loved most about his new teeth was that they felt and looked so natural. The key to long term success was placement of one implant per missing tooth.

Another possible design is placement of a bridge with two implants. But his is not recommended as it has increased risk of failure due to excessive force present in the back of the mouth.
