Most people picture titanium when they think of implants, but recent advances in dental surgical materials over the past decade have resulted in a natural tooth-colored, metal-free alternative to traditional implants called zirconia implants. Zirconia is a type of high-strength ceramic that provides an excellent option for patients who are sensitive to metal, or would simply prefer a more natural, holistic solution.
What Is a Zirconia Implant?
Zirconia (zirconium oxide) is a high-strength ceramic that’s been used in medicine and dentistry for decades in the manufacture of dental crowns. More recently, it has been used to manufacture dental implants. Like titanium implants, a zirconia implant acts as an artificial tooth root: it’s placed into your jawbone, fuses with the bone over time, and supports a crown that looks and functions like a natural tooth.
Since it is a ceramic, zirconia is completely metal-free, and its bright, ivory-white color provides an aesthetic appearance that will not show through thin soft tissue.
Why Patients Choose Zirconia
Several benefits draw patients toward ceramic implants:
Natural aesthetics. Because zirconia is white rather than gray, there’s no risk of a dark metallic line showing through at the gumline—an issue that can appear with titanium, especially if your gums are thin or recede slightly over time.
Metal-free biocompatibility. Zirconia is highly biocompatible and is an ideal option for patients who prefer to avoid metal in their bodies or who have sensitivities to metal. The gum tissue tends to respond very well to ceramic.

Why Specialized Instrumentation Matters
Treatment planning a zirconia implant is similar to treatment planning a titanium implant. We complete a digital workup, determine where the crown should go based on occlusion and esthetics, and ensure that there is enough bone below the ideal crown location to place a dental implant. As always in our digital workups, we merge the cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan and the digital intraoral scan to plan exactly where the implant should be placed for ideal function and aesthetics. We then fabricate a surgical guide through our in-house lab for predictable placement.
To place a zirconia implant, we use instrumentation that is specialized to place ceramic dental implants, as ceramic and titanium are different materials with their own properties.

What to Expect From the Procedure
The journey usually begins with a consultation and imaging to assess your jawbone and plan the ideal position for your implant. Using the 3D cone-beam CT (CBCT) scan and intraoral scan, we complete a digital workup and plan the exact placement along with the restorative dentist. Once we agree on the restoration plan, we fabricate and print the surgical guide. We can complete the surgery under local anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
Over the following weeks, the implant integrates with your bone in a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, your custom crown is attached, and you walk away with a tooth that looks and feels like your own.
