Site Preservation / Augmentation Grafting

VIDEO: extraction & site preservation grafting

Following extraction of teeth, the jaw bone can undergo significant resorption and loss, resulting in site defects that are unsightly and difficult to maintain proper hygiene, as well as creating a poor site for implant placement. Site grafting should discussed in every patient having an extraction and should be ideally performed at the same time.

A site preservation grafting is recommended in the following situations:

  • Augmentation of bone loss due to periodontal disease or abscess
  • Enhancement of the tissue architecture in the upper front area (Aesthetic zone) to optimize aesthetics and smile line
  • Preservation / Augmentation of bone necessary to allow placement of dental implants or other prosthesis at a later time

The materials used for site grafting are safe and easy to place. The grafted material undergoes gradual resorption and replacement by patient’s actual bone over a 4-6 month period, at which time dental implants may be placed.

Patient’s recovery and immediate post operative experience is unaffected.
